Behind-the-Scenes Look: Baymeadows Movers Teams Up with Chipman and OMA to Haul Away Legacy Equipment from AMC Theatres
Most moviegoers walk into a movie theater focused on the movie they're about to watch. They notice the giant screen, comfortable seats, and maybe the smell of fresh popcorn. What they don't see is all the work happening behind the scenes to deliver that experience—or what it takes when it's time to retire decades of equipment and open the door for the future.
Not long ago, Baymeadows Movers had the opportunity to partner with Chipman Relocation & Logistics on a unique commercial moving project via our membership in the Office Moving Alliance (OMA). Together, we supported the removal of older projection equipment from several AMC Theatre locations. It was not your typical commercial move. It demanded careful planning, specialized equipment, experienced crews, and seamless coordination between dependable relocation partners.
Projects like these are among the reasons we love what we do. No two commercial moves are ever exactly alike, and that's what keeps our work rewarding.
Every Commercial Move Has a Story
One of the best aspects of commercial moving is the variety.
One week we're moving an entire school before students come back for the new year. The next we're transporting physical therapy equipment to a new healthcare facility. Then we find ourselves inside a movie theater, carefully dismantling and removing equipment that has entertained millions of people over the years.
This AMC project was especially memorable because it entailed removing large digital cinema projection systems, as well as several pieces of historic 35mm projection equipment. Walking into the projection booths felt like traveling back in time. Some of the film projectors and reels had been part of the movie-going experience long before digital projection had become the industry norm.
For cinema lovers, it was riveting.
For our crew, it was a reflection that every piece of equipment we move carries its own history.
Great Projects Begin with Great Planning
Jobs like this don't begin when the moving truck pulls up.
Long before the first projector is taken down, our team works through logistics, scheduling, access points, equipment requirements, manpower, and safety planning.
Collaborating with Chipman Relocation & Logistics, we managed every phase of the project to make sure each theater could be completed safely and efficiently. One of the greatest benefits of being part of the Office Moving Alliance (OMA) is access to a nationwide network of seasoned commercial movers who uphold the same commitment to professionalism and customer service. By blending Chipman's national relocation expertise with Baymeadows Movers' local knowledge and project management experience, we were able to execute the work seamlessly from start to finish.
Movie theaters weren't built with equipment removal in mind.
Projection booths are often tucked away on upper levels with cramped corridors, snug doorways, and restricted access. A few buildings have elevators, while others do not. Transporting large projection systems through those spaces involves much more than simply putting them on a dolly and wheeling toward the truck.
Each challenge needs to be identified before any work begins.
That's where experience makes all the difference.
It's Truly About Far More Than Muscle
People often assume moving heavy equipment is just about raw strength.
The reality is that commercial moving hinges on preparation, technique, and having the right tools for the job.
Undertakings like the AMC equipment removal call for specialized dollies, rigging equipment, lift systems, protective materials, and skilled crews who know how to safely navigate oversized equipment through tight spaces.
Each projector had to be meticulously disconnected, protected, maneuvered through the building, and carefully loaded for transport.
Most of these systems are not only heavy—they're also extremely delicate. One careless bump into a doorway or uneven transition could result in significant damage.
Patience and communication are as important as physical strength.
Safeguarding the Building Is Every Bit as Important
While our focus is on carefully moving equipment, we're equally committed to safeguarding the customer's facility.
Commercial properties represent a sizable investment, and even modest repairs can become disruptive and costly.
Once a project is done, our goal is for customers to remember how easy the whole experience felt, not the moving process itself.
Teamwork Makes the Difference
Large commercial moving projects are never a solo undertaking.
Every member of the crew has a clear role, and communication is key from start to finish.
One person may be maneuvering equipment through a doorway while another manages the load. Someone else is watching clearances, while another team member is preparing the next piece for transport.
When seasoned crews work in sync, there's a rhythm that takes shape. That's something that isn't learned overnight.
Observing our crew work together was a clear example of what happens when seasoned movers share the same dedication to safety, communication, and customer service.
A Little Enjoyment Along the Way
Even during challenging commercial projects, it's worthwhile to enjoy the experience.
Being employed inside movie theaters certainly had its perks.
Our crew couldn't resist sneaking downstairs for some movie snacks during breaks in jobs on the project. After spending the day behind the scenes where few people ever get to go, popcorn somehow tasted even better.
Such moments make long workdays memorable and remind us that while we take our work seriously, we also have fun doing it.
Commercial Moving Goes Beyond Transportation
Most people believe moving companies just load trucks and unload them at another location.
Commercial moving is so much more than that.
These projects often involve logistics planning, inventory management, warehousing, project management, scheduling, specialized equipment handling, and coordinating several contractors.
Each customer has different needs.
Some businesses need to relocate hundreds of employees across a weekend.
Some need sensitive medical equipment transported without disruption.
Many projects take place overnight to minimize downtime.
Others—like the AMC project—require the careful removal of specialized equipment from unique environments.
Each relocation calls for adaptability, preparation, and problem solving.
Here at Baymeadows Movers, when someone asks, "Can you help with this?" our first instinct is almost always, "Let's figure out how."
Experience Builds Confidence
For decades, Baymeadows Movers has been proudly serving Jacksonville and Northeast Florida, and experience has taught us that successful projects all come down to the same basics:
Preparation.
Communication.
Professionalism.
Trust.
Our customers know we'll arrive prepared, keep them informed throughout the project, handle their property with care, and fix problems instead of causing them.
Whether we're on the job inside schools, hospitals, office buildings, warehouses, government facilities, entertainment venues, or commercial campuses, our approach remains the same.
Protect the customer.
Protect the equipment.
Finish the work safely.
Leave the site better than we found it.
Protecting a Part of Movie History
Among the surprising highlights of this project was encountering some of the original 35mm projection systems that once gave life to countless films.
Well before streaming services and digital cinema, these machines created memorable experiences for generations of moviegoers.
Standing beside them gave our crew a true appreciation for how much technology has evolved over the years.
It's not every morning that a moving company has the chance to help retire a small piece of entertainment history.
For us, it truly was an experience that we will never forget.
